Housing in the South West and what it means for insulation

Bristol and Bath bring Georgian and Victorian terraces — some listed — alongside inter-war suburbs; Cheltenham and Gloucester mix Regency and 1930s stock; Devon and Cornwall are full of older cottages, cob and stone walls, slate roofs and holiday-let conversions. Swindon and Plymouth have large post-war estates. Exposure and driving rain on the coast make ventilation and moisture the first survey question.

Common insulation projects in the region

  • Roof-slope insulation in slate-roofed cottages
  • Loft conversions in Bristol and Bath terraces
  • Conservation-area and listed-building assessments
  • Holiday-let and second-home loft rooms
  • Spray foam replacement in coastal roofs

Slate, cob and driving rain

Old slate roofs on shallow rafters, breathable cob and stone walls, and coastal exposure make moisture and breathability the first questions across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset; foil is a roof conversation here, not a wall one.

Why foil may suit some homes here

Slate roofs on old rafters with no depth to spare and owners who cannot raise the ridge are where multifoil under the rafters is worth investigating. The decision rests on the whole roof build-up — rafter depth, ventilation, moisture, existing insulation and intended use — not on material thickness alone. Foil insulation guide.

Why foil may not suit others

Stone and cob walls need breathable, designed systems; foil is not a wall answer in this stock. A straightforward cold loft with good access is often more appropriately upgraded with conventional mineral-wool loft insulation than a rafter-level foil system, and we say so when it is.

What foil insulation costs in the South West

We do not publish invented regional prices. What moves a quote here is the same as anywhere else:

  • property size and roof area
  • access to the loft or roof space
  • what insulation is there now and whether it stays
  • the system selected — multifoil alone, multifoil with PIR, or an alternative
  • preparation work, including removal of old material or spray foam
  • ventilation and detailing at eaves, dormers and penetrations

National indicative ranges are in the foil insulation cost guide; as genuine project data from the South West builds, regional ranges will be published here.

Questions homeowners ask

Do you install foil insulation throughout the South West?
Assessment and installation capability covers the South West; availability varies by postcode, property and insulation type. Enter your postcode and we tell you the position before asking for contact details.
Can you survey my loft in Bristol?
Yes, where a physical inspection is needed. Surveys in Bristol and Bath are arranged by postcode and project type after the initial check.
How much does foil insulation cost in the South West?
We do not publish invented regional prices. National indicative ranges are in the cost guide — roughly £45–£80 per m² for multifoil to rafters — and a fixed price follows the assessment.
Can multifoil be installed under rafters?
Yes; it is the standard detail for loft rooms. The quilt runs across the underside of the rafters with the rafter depth forming the upper air space and battens forming the lower one.
Does foil insulation require an air gap?
Reflective performance depends on the air spaces in the certified build-up — commonly around 20–25mm on each face. The product certificate governs.
Can foil insulation cause condensation?
Condensation is a moisture, temperature and ventilation question. A vapour-resistant foil on the warm side of a ventilated build-up reduces the risk; on the cold side of an unventilated one it traps moisture. The survey checks ventilation first.
Do you replace insulation after spray foam removal?
Yes. Timbers, membrane and ventilation are inspected and recorded before any replacement insulation is specified. Spray foam enquiries are common across the South West.
