Housing in the West Midlands and what it means for insulation
The conurbation is dominated by late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the industrial cores of Birmingham, the Black Country and Coventry, ringed by very large stocks of 1930s semi-detached houses with hipped roofs and shallow rafters. Post-war council estates and 1960s–70s houses with trussed roofs make up much of Telford, Redditch and the outer suburbs; rural Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Staffordshire add older detached and cottage stock. Shallow hipped roofs on inter-war semis
The region's enormous inter-war semi stock has hipped roofs on 100mm rafters with purlins, and a loft conversion loses headroom fast under deep board. Multifoil under the rafters with PIR between is the standard investigation; the Black Country's spray foam legacy means the survey checks for foam before anything else.
Why foil may suit some homes here
Inter-war semis across the region have rafters too shallow for board alone; multifoil under the rafters, often with 50mm PIR between, is the usual way to make a loft room without losing headroom. The decision rests on the whole roof build-up — rafter depth, ventilation, moisture, existing insulation and intended use — not on material thickness alone. Foil insulation guide.
Why foil may not suit others
Most of the region's post-war semis and estate houses have open, accessible cold lofts. Those are mineral-wool jobs and we say so. A straightforward cold loft with good access is often more appropriately upgraded with conventional mineral-wool loft insulation than a rafter-level foil system, and we say so when it is.
